The traditional, physical couponing is excising price discrimination by selling less to a small segment of price-sensitive customers, such as fulltime housewife and grandma. Because it takes tremendous time and energy to locate newspapers, browse through irrelevant categories, cut clips and redeem coupons, which is the way to differentiate the price-sensitive segment, its redemption rate is very low (less than 2%).
The Internet approach, however, significantly reduces the barriers to utilize coupons by making the experiences handy, quick and more decent (the redemption rate under the online way is a stunning 75%). Therefore, the online approach has indeed transferred the goal of couponing from price discrimination to new customer acquisition from online population and conversion from competitors with even lower cost. |
